Meal, Ready-To-Eat (MRE)

Couple of years ago, I went for an overseas trip and that's where I obtained this awesome and cool looking meal. Its known as MRE or Meal Ready To Eat. Basically it's a full course meal contained in a packet. I don't know why, but I've always liked meals that's bundled up (bundled up might not be the right choice of words, but it's all I can think of right now. :S ) together all in one place, kinda like airline meals or MREs. I've wanted one of these for a long time now, and my trip to Canada makes it possible for me to get one. I got it at a army surplus store called Crown Surplus Store and it cost about 15 Canadian Dollar...I know it's expensive, that's why I just got one MRE. Besides that, walking into that store is like heaven to me, lots of interesting stuff. I can cross off 'Eat a MRE' from my 'Things to do in My Life' list now.  :)

This is a Civilian MRE and it doesn't come with a flameless ration heater. If I'm not wrong, only the military grade MRE comes with the heater. They do sell the US Military MRE in ebay, the shipping cost alone is horrifying.

This is how it looks like. A meal in a bag. :) Opening it is like opening a present, you don't know what you might get. haha

Each MRE contains :-
Main Course
Side Dish
Spreads such as cheese, peanut butter or jelly
Powdered beverage mix
A spoon, napkin, coffee, salt & pepper, moist towelette, creamer and sugar

Peelable Seal, doesn't required any scissor or knife.

As MREs are designed as meal to go, the packaging are really strong. They're made to withstand rough conditions and exposures to the element.

The best part, finding out what's in the package.

The Main Course

Spaghetti with Meat Sauce

Each meal has the nutrition facts on it and a bag of MRE meals contain about 1250 calories.

On the back of the box, it even comes with an instruction on how to prevent basic heat injury.

Side Dish

Potato Cheddar Soup

And this is what it looks like on the back of the box.

Cheese Spread

I just love the design of the packaging. Looks so military-ish, which I love.

Powdered Beverage

Cocoa Beverage Powder. (Still haven't try this yet, its somewhere in my house)

Iced Tea Drink Mix

An Energy Bar

I guess this is a bonus snack when you buy the Civilian MRE from Canada. There's a Canadian flag on it so I'm just assuming its a Canadian energy

Vacuum sealed. No 'lao hong' business here. :)

So let's see how the food looks like, shall we?

The pouch that contains the Spaghetti with Meat and Sauce. I remembered my sis said that she will never eat it.

As I don't have the flameless heater, I would have to settled by boiling a pot of water and throw in the pouch to heat it up. The pouch is made to withstand high temperature and it's made out of heavy duty foil thingy or something so it's

Pouch enjoying a hot bath.

And....this is how it looks like.

It taste alright. Kinda like spaghetti that has been soaked too long and the noodle is mushy. There's some bits of meat in there too. Definitely not al dente (lol) but if I'm starving while camping somewhere, I bet this would taste awesome. Not that I have any camping experience. lol

This Potato Cheddar Soup is AWESOME. Seriously it's so good I want more. It has chunks of potatoes in it and some bacon also if I'm not wrong. It's creamy and delicious. Love it, yums.

Carrot Pound Cake

This is also very good. It's moist and tasty. There's also some bits of carrots and nuts in it. Taste better than Secret Recipe cakes if you ask me. haha

Total yums.

Cheese and Crackers

Cheese and crackers, what could go wrong?

Creamy cheese spreads with crackers. Taste good, kinda like that Kraft Cheese Spread and some crackers.

The accessory pack

The content of the accessory pack. Coffee, creamer, spoon. napkins and bla bla bla.

And last but not least,

Iced Tea Drink Mix. Lemon Flavored.

I like this. Refreshing. What else can I say. haha Overall its an interesting experience and I'm glad I bought this and try it myself, at least I know how it taste like and looks like in real life now. (rather than just watching the reviews in Youtube. lol) This is pretty hard to obtain in Malaysia though, I saw a couple of MREs sold in one of the shop in Sunway Pyramid, Kuala Lumpur. It's like RM 50+ and the menu is not appetizing to me so I decided not to get it.

Basically that's what contained in a bag of MRE. If you've tried one before, share your experience with me! Till next time!

  1. This looks good! Better than the breakfast packs we got at the service apartment where we were staying in Wellington, New Zealand...and good thing it came with the room, Not cheap at all. Nothing there is cheap.

  2. i was simply perusing along and happened upon your web journal. simply needed to say great online journal and this article truly helped me. MRE Giant
